This 1966 Honda S600 Coupe (chassis AS285C1001396) is described as a rust-free, running and driving example that had been parked for about five years. The car could use paint and interior work as well as some attention to the underbody, but it is in much nicer shape than most others we’ve seen. These were remarkably advanced sports cars for their time, reflecting much of Honda’s motorcycle expertise applied to a four-wheel platform. Find this one here on eBay in North Hills, California.
Possessing a fastback roofline reminiscent of the contemporary Triumph GT6, the S600 is a handsome car. This car has been repainted from the original yellow hue, and while bright white is always an appropriate shade for a Honda, a proper restoration would return it to the original color. The seller has included plenty of detailed photos–it looks like the brightwork is in excellent shape.
Inside, the dash pad will need replacement, and the same can be said for the headliner, which seems dingy or dirty. The thin-rimmed wooden steering wheel looks to be in perfect shape, however, as does the metal dash trim. The seats, too, look lovely. The seller says that the gauges work properly and that the radio is missing, but what radio could compete with the sound of that high-revving engine?
Less than 60 horsepower make it to the rear wheels, but that’s a remarkable figure for a 600cc engine built in the 1960s. A quartet of side-draft carburetors feeds the inline four, likely producing plenty of great intake sounds. It’s always a treat to see a tachometer that goes to 11.
This S600 seems to have a lot of potential. The car is styled nicely, is in good condition, and the new owner is unlikely to encounter another one on the road. There are some title issues to be sorted, but the car looks worth the hassle.
