CSL Style Sedan: 1973 BMW Bavaria 5-Speed

$

This 1973 BMW Bavaria (chassis 3105665) is a good-looking 5-speed example that’s said to be in perfect running order. Sold with complete service records covering the past seven years, mileage is quoted as 115k and we dig the blue over blue color combination. Find it here on Craigslist in Long Beach, California for $8k OBO. Special thanks to BaT reader Lucha Libre Racing for this submission.

1973 Bmw Bavaria for sale 5 speed manual very clean runs great

The bumperless front and CSL-style air dam with brake cooling ducts is a nice touch, as are period Alpina-made E9 wheels. The fender-mounted mirrors are sure to be controversial, but we think they look pretty cool. Moving around to the unmodified rear end, things look almost plain in comparison.

1973 Bmw Bavaria for sale 5 speed manual very clean runs great

The interior is holding up pretty well for its age but does show some dash cracks and a split driver’s bottom seat cushion–the wrapped steering wheel is likely hiding a worn rim as well. The seat should be easy enough to repair, while remaining upholstery and trim appear to be nicely preserved.

1973 Bmw Bavaria for sale 5 speed manual very clean runs great

The red painted air snorkel is a bit odd, but otherwise things look all stock under the forward-tilting hood. No maintenance specifics are provided, but what sounds like a big stack of receipts would make it easy to trace the car’s history since going back to 2008 or so.

Seems like a good one to us, and considering the similar driving experience and much lower point of entry, these E3 chassis cars offer more for the money when compared to a Bee Em coupe of the same era.

Hiroshima’s First Four Wheeler: 1967 Mazda R360

$

0

This 1967 Mazda R360 Coupe appears to be a nicely restored example of the marque’s first four-wheel passenger car model. Offering 2+2 seating, independent suspension, and a four stroke V-twin engine, the affordably priced and advanced coupe was instrumental in further expanding Japan’s already booming Kei car market.  Find it here on Trade Car View in Chiba, Japan for $20,917

01w1-620x465

Few details are provided in the listing, but the crisp white paint looks like a recent respray, and the light blue roof offers a pleasant contrast for the small but airy greenhouse. The wheels may be aftermarket, or might just be missing the stock chrome wheel covers. In either case, the unadorned rims have a modestly aggressive appearance that’s a great fit.

131-620x465

A small bench seat should be located somewhere below that large rear window, making this a true 2+2, assuming passengers are of compatible size. The small logo and decal on the rear window might provide some clues regarding the shop the performed the restoration.

141-620x465

The very simple dash and minimal instrumentation is let down somewhat by the newer aftermarket steering wheel–seats are too modern for our tastes, too. The ad mentions a manual transmission, but it is difficult to determine from the lone interior picture if both a shifter and clutch pedal are present–this may instead be a two-speed torque converter automatic, which was a first for a Japanese car when the R360 launched in 1960.

031-620x465

The air-cooled 356cc V-twin is good for about 16 hp, which was enough to motivate all 838 pounds of curb weight to about 50 mph. A four stroke was another first for the Kei market.

041-620x465

While importing a car from Japan can be an expensive and time consuming process, a restored R360 could be a good way to get started on filling up a shipping container–at just under 10 feet long, there should be plenty of room left for more cars, trucks, trikes and bikes.

BaT Auction: 1981 Porsche 911SC Coupe

This 1981 Porsche 911SC coupe is a nice driver in attractive dark gray that comes with a clean title and clean Carfax report. The car does have some exterior and interior flaws, but overall looks like an affordable entry into an unmodified 911SC coupe . It has been repainted and there does appear to be evidence of hasty accident repair in the rear which is photographed in detail below. The seller says the car drives nicely and everything works including A/C. It spent much of its life in Florida and shows only some surface corrosion underneath.

Photo Jul 10, 5 01 32 PM

Dark gray is believed to be the original color and the car has been repainted. Some areas are better than others, and some paint is shown to have been done over the front fender rubber beads near the windshield. 6″ and 7″ Fuchs wheels look to have been refinished in the past and wear Falken rubber with good tread remaining. The 911SC script is also missing on the decklid.

1981 Porsche 911SC02

The interior is mostly original with many factory original details intact. The stock steering wheel has been replaced with a 3-spoke unit and seats are in good condition with some slight separation visible near the bolsters.53k miles are shown on the odometer, but the earliest CarFax mileage reference is in 1992 with 4210 miles so it is difficult to know what transpired before that. This car was likely delivered new with a 85MPH speedometer, so it was probably replaced at some point with a 150 MPH unit. All gauges and accessories work properly according to the seller.

Screen shot 2015-07-14 at 11.28.06 AM

The car was purchased from a private party who did not provide much in the way of service records or history. No accidents were mentioned and the Carfax is clean, though the seller has photographed areas around the engine bay where metalwork looks to have been performed. The car wears no engine bay stickers and the latch looks to have been painted over.

1981 Porsche 911SC-3

The seller says the car drives well, with good clutch take-up and good power throughout the rev range of the 3.0L flat six. Brakes are reported to be effective though the seller says handling is a bit soft and could be improved with new shocks. The car will have fluids serviced for the new owner prior to pickup, and the full Carfax report is viewable below.

187 MPH at Bonneville: 1932 Ford Coupster

$

0

This 1932 Bonneville roadster/street car was built using a Ford “Deuce” body which started life as a 5 window coupe. Designed to run in the Street Roadster (S/R) category at Bonneville, it was built to C class specifications starting in 2001 and finally ran on the salt in 2008.  Wearing red oxide primer with a flat black grill shell and bare aluminum hood sides, the car has a good period look. The car has run as fast as 187+ on a 229.480 record. Find it here on Jalopy Journal in Harwinton, Connecticut for $38,000 obo.

Deuce 3-4

Though the seller states that the car is built for the S/R class, a quick look at the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) rule book suggests that the class it most resembles is called STR. At Bonneville and under the auspices of the SCTA, cars are classed in two categories: body and engine displacement. For the Street Roadster Class, certain design features must be present. This class exists for cars, built prior to 1949, and in quantities of at least 500, that at visually aren’t that far removed from the street. A quick look at our featured racer shows that it has headlights, windshield stanchions, and slightly modified rear fenders: All are required by the rules of the class. Cars competing in C class are allowed to have engines  from 306.00–372.99ci. The seller does not state the current size of the Small Block Chevy but says that last year the engine was upgraded with A.F.R. 235 heads, and a new cam. Once again specifications for the cam are not included.

Deuce Front

This ’32, passes its ponies through a Dynamic Racing TH350, and on to a Winters quick-change with undisclosed gears, while Hoosier tires keep contact with the hallowed salt at Bonneville. The seller states that the car should be ready for the 2015 season (currently scheduled for August 8-14), but that a look at the updated rulebook is required to be certain.

Deuce and Friends

Though racers had been using the salt flats at Bonneville for years (Malcolm Campbell was the first to go 300mph there in 1935), in 1949 Hot Rod Magazine and the SCTA teamed up to create the Bonneville National Speed Trials. Their event grew into what we now call Speed Week, and as the years have passed classes and engine sizes have continued to grow. This 1932 “Coupester” represents a wonderful opportunity to get in on the fun and history that is Bonneville, and likely could not be duplicated for the asking price.

Scorpione’s Cousin: 1971 Lombardi Grand Prix 850

$

This 1971 Lombardi Grand Prix 850 has been restored and is ready to drive, though some slightly less-than-perfect details like the clear engine bay lid, over-large tires and other relatively easily corrected issues are likely to keep its price lower than normal. Find it here on eBay.de in Schauenburg, Germany with no reserve beyond an unmet 9k euro (~$9,856 today) opening bid. Special thanks to BaT reader Kyle K. for this submission.

Lombardi 850 Grand Prix (Abarth Scorpione)

Also marketed as the Abarth Scorpione and OTAS 820, these Fiat 850-based cars were styled in-house by Carrozzeria Lombardi. This one is wearing improperly sized rolling stock, and would look much better with Cromodora-made four spoke Abarth items as is more commonly fitted.

Lombardi 850 Grand Prix (Abarth Scorpione)

The interior looks OK but cheap carpeting as well as the too-modern steering wheel/shift knob combo detract quite a bit. We’d concentrate on fixing the exterior’s issues first then tend to the cabin. That center stack of instruments might not be very practical, but it looks fantastic and remains one of the coolest gauge binnacles ever made.

Lombardi 850 Grand Prix (Abarth Scorpione)

These later SII cars had a fiberglass engine cover, here seen replaced by an ill-advised and poor-fitting Plexiglas unit. Earlier series one cars made do with the Fiat 850’s standard steel lid, and if compatible we’d try to hunt down a suitable replacement.

Lombardi 850 Grand Prix (Abarth Scorpione)

Hastily finished but apparently a good candidate for some final finishing work, these are really interesting looking little cars in person and have always seemed like they’d be a blast to drive, too.

Minimally Modified: 1989 Nissan Skyline GT-R in Texas

$

0

This 1989 Skyline GT-R doesn’t appear to be too heavily modified, but several signs point to this one not being a Nismo as quoted, primarily its incorrect color–actual, limited production Group A homologation models came in Gunmetal Gray only. 46k miles is around average for these imports, and the seller says this one is always garaged and driven only on weekends. Find it here on Craigslist in Jonestown, Texas for $36k. Special thanks to BaT reader Larry C. for this submission.

1989 Nissan Skyline gtr nismo

The GTR’s earned their Godzilla name both on and off the track, as this generation swept an entire 29 race season of the JTCC in its first year. The road-going Skylines aren’t terribly far off from race spec, and if a true Nismo car it’d be one of only of 560 made. We’re nearly 100% sure its not, due to the incorrect color, missing extra intercooler ducting, side skirts and more.

1989 Nissan Skyline gtr nismo

Mods sound to be limited, the seller detailing a recently installed race clutch and lightweight flywheel, straight exhaust and other, relatively minor changes. Open pipes won’t be easy to live with, but the upgraded clutch and flywheel shouldn’t be too hard to deal with and might actually improve the driving experience.

50k Mile 4-Speed: 1970 Mercedes Benz 250C

0

This 1970 Mercedes Benz 250C is described as a 50k mile survivor in excellent, drivable condition. Sold with documentation dating to new, the car looks very nice inside and out, while features like a factory 4-speed, A/C and Euro market headlights further its appeal. Find it here on Craigslist in Webster Groves, Missouri for $15k. Special thanks to BaT reader Noah L. for this submission.

1970 Mercedes Benz 250C W114 W115 /8

Headlights are French market Bosch OEM items with yellow reflectors and bulbs. These one-piece glass units look much better than US market items, though the originals are included should the new owner wish to return it to stock appearance. Originality isn’t mentioned, but the term “survivor” does imply a high degree of factory preservation.

1970 Mercedes Benz 250C W114 W115 /8

Though seats show minimal wear, MBTex is very robust and the likelihood of upholstery remaining original is pretty high. These car’s pillarless construction makes window-down cruising feel quite special, even without a factory sliding steel sunroof like this example. Many of these cars came with automatics, making it a real treat to see a stickshift between the front seats. Carpets, door cards and rear seats look great too, and the big, flat dash shows no cracks.

1970 Mercedes Benz 250C W114 W115 /8

The twin carb, OHC, 160 HP 2.8 liter six fitted to these cars is a lovely, revvy and good-sounding motor, and in conjunction with three pedals should make for a very fun-to-drive cruiser. As mentioned above, extensive documentation dating to new is included, as are an extra set of steelies.

1970 Mercedes Benz 250C W114 W115 /8

Period sales materials are also mentioned, and the seller says it’s ready to be driven anywhere. We’d start with a long weekend road trip and go from there.

BaT Auction: 1969 Merlyn Mk 11A Formula Ford

$

0

This 1969 Merlyn MK 11A is an excellent race-ready example of Merlyn’s first Formula Ford racer. The car was campaigned in SCCA competition from new and comes with a binder full of history and three logbooks from SCCA, SVRA, and CSRG. It was restored by Bob Akins Motorsports in the 1990s and received a comprehensive mechanical overhaul in 2005 by Jay Ivey Engines with all rings, pistons, and bearings rebuilt or replaced. Between 2011-2013 the car received further enhancements including a new fuel cell, rebuilt steering rack, new radiator, and more detailed below. Powered by a 1600cc Ford engine, the seller says it is track ready and has no deferred maintenance, having always been raced regularly and kept in top shape. It has been regularly serviced by Genoa Racing in Novato, CA since 2011, the owner of which is a former Formula Ford racer himself who takes pride in maintaining these cars to a very high standard. The car comes with a large spares package and can be inspected any time.

1969 Merlyn-3

The Merlyn Mk. 11a was built by Colchester Racing Developments which remains in business today still supplying parts for these cars. This one has a clean dark green livery over the Mk 11a sleek cigar shape and tapered nose. An older repaint remains in very good condition with only small imperfections like an area of cracking on the nose and small chips at the edges of bodywork.

Screen shot 2015-07-14 at 6.29.10 PM

The tube frame chassis looks very clean and the car received rebuilt shocks 3 seasons ago. 4-lug Revolution alloy wheels are wrapped in proper Avon treaded race tires. The motor dyno’d at 110 HP @ 6200RPM and 105 ft-lbs @ 5000RPM, and the seller says the engine is strong and ready to race with approximately 15 hours on the motor since the rebuild. These are great vintage racers with a nice balance of power and handling that suits a wide range of driver skill levels.

1969 Merlyn-4

The cockpit has a cool period correct layout with a vintage bucket seat, leather wrapped steering wheel, and Smiths instruments. Race harnesses were replaced in 2012 and are currently legal and up to date. The 1600cc Ford race mill is shifted through a Hewland 4-speed, and pedals are offset for ideal heel/toe layout.

1969 Merlyn-5

The 2005 engine rebuild by Ivey Engines addressed all major components including the crank, rings, pistons, timing chain, and all bearings. The head was freshened and carburetor rebuilt, along with a new clutch, flywheel, and ignition system. The 2011-2013 refresh included a new battery, new brake calipers, a new fuel cell, and new radiator.

1969 Merlyn

The Bob Akins restoration in the 1990s is documented with photos included in the sale. A nice spares packages includes 4 gearsets, an extra radiator, one extra set of front wishbones, a spare starter motor, extra battery, and a spare set of steel wheels. Overall this looks like an affordable and turn-key entry to an exciting vintage race class. It has been run most recently with CSRG and meets their requirements for period aesthetics and drivetrain configuration.

Ultimate Form: 1990 Mercedes Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II

This 1990 Mercedes Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II (VIN WDB2010361F735498) is number 28 of 502 built and has traveled only 39k kilometers from new. These DTM homologation specials offer a number of upgrades over standard cars, and as noted by the seller are infrequently offered for sale in public forums. Find this one here at Silverstone Auctions where it will cross the blocks sometime between July 35th and 26th, 2015. Special thanks to BaT reader Nick J. for this submission.

1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II

Of the 502 built, 500 were made in this car’s Blauschwarz or blue-black, the other two were painted Astralsilber. Wind-tunnel developed bodywork is functional, lowering the drag coefficient to 0.29 while simultaneously increasing downforce. The big rear wing is adjustable, and these 17″ wheels are standard OEM items.

1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II

The interior of these cars remained virtually untouched, and we’ve always found their stodgy four spoke steering wheels to be an endearing, typically old-school MB anachronism. This one comes highly optioned with heated front seats, A/C, rear speakers and a fire extinguisher. Full self-leveling suspension is cockpit-adjustable on the fly.

1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II

The Cosworth-developed 2.5 liter is good for about 240 HP in this final, ultimate form, which in combo with these cars’ excellent, light-footed handling made for impressive performance numbers back in the day.

1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II

We’re serious suckers for a good homologation special, and the Cosworth Evo II has long held a permanent place in our fantasy garage. We think this one would be perfect to get the ball rolling.

BaT Auction: Matching Numbers 1957 Porsche 356A 1600 Speedster

$

0

This 1957 Porsche 356A 1600 Speedster is a fully matching numbers example that has been owned by the seller since 1962. This is a running and driving car that is offered with its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and a comprehensive photo gallery verifying this chassis (83244) still has original engine #65157 and transmission #14039. Still wearing its factory correct Signal Red paint, the car will need restoration and rust repair but appears very complete down to the tool kit and Speedster side curtains. It has not been modified in any way and the seller drives it around town for fun. It has been garaged for decades and starts and drives with transmission, brakes, and lights fully operational as can be seen in this short video. This is one of the most exciting projects we’ve featured and looks to be an excellent basis for a sympathetic restoration effort.

1957 Porsche Speedster-2

This is a very honest car with original details inside and out. The seller is the third owner and does a good job photographing rust areas, which can be seen in the lower doors and underbody structural channels. The car had a total exterior repaint in 1967. Lacquer was used which has faded. The chassis number 83244, original engine stamping 65157, and other identifying numbers can be seen below and in the full gallery.

Screen shot 2015-07-13 at 2.33.49 PM

The right front is dented but overall sheet metal is straight and original. Note the single Reutter badge on the passenger fender which is correct for ’57. Chrome side trim is included in a spares package along with other items like all four hubcaps and removable Speedster side curtains. It is missing the Speedster fender badges. The white soft top folds up and down easily.

1957 Porsche Speedster int

The interior is also very correct with original Speedster seats and proper unmodified dash. The original steering wheel remains in addition to gold Porsche dash script and all working instruments. There are some holes in the drivers side floor which are documented below. Note the small gas can located inside the spare tire under the hood, a rare and cool period accessory that has been with the car for decades.

Screen shot 2015-07-10 at 12.35.24 PM

Rust repair will be essential. Typical corrosion can be seen in the trailing arm pivot supports, front lower support channels, and elsewhere viewable below. Some of the worst areas can be seen above.

1957 Porsche Speedster eng

All the spare parts photographed are included with the car. Of note is the replacement Speedster tool kit complete with pouch and original 356A Driver’s Manual.

0 SAM_0017

The seller drives the car around town regularly, but not across the country as he did in the ’60s. Here is another short video of the car being driven back into the garage. The car sounds reasonably healthy and it’s cool to see the long-term owner in the driver’s seat.

Screen shot 2015-07-10 at 12.45.33 PM

Including in the sale is a large history file including the 1962 Florida title and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. Be sure to check out the full photo gallery here on Flickr.

Neglected Quattrovalvole: 1700 Mile 1985 Lamborghini Countach Project

This 1985 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole (VIN ZA9C005A0FLA12806) is a small bumpered European delivery model with only 1,700 miles from new. Recently purchased from its original owner, the car is dirty and in need of restoration but is said to have never been crashed and sale includes the original wheels as well as a set of Monaco plates. Find it here on eBay somewhere in the Midwest with bidding north of $200k and reserve not met. Special thanks to BaT reader Steve N. for this submission.

3157-465x620 (1)

Note the period-added Zender rear flares and 25th Anniversary spec wheels. The rear wears a US-spec rectangular taillight fascia, and in the process of restoration we’d try to source a proper European replacement–the flares would have to go as well. The car remains as-found and is still filthy with dirt and dust.

$_12

Presumably, this is as it was found in Monaco. How rich does one have to be to buy a brand new supercar, drive it around the block a few times then park and forget it for three decades? It’s a sad outcome, but we’d be surprised if it won’t have a happy ending.

3159-465x620 (1)

Though similar to the 25th Anniversary items currently fitted, these earlier telephone dial wheels are altogether more attractive with a simpler, curved face and body color paint rather than polished fittings. There’s no word on whether the 48 valve five liter V12 still turns, but anyone looking to restore an 80’s Lambo probably has room in the budget regardless.

MkIA Project: 1965 Sunbeam Tiger for Restoration

$
0
0

This 1965 Sunbeam Tiger (chassis B9472051) is said to be highly original including its matching numbers 260ci Ford-sourced V8. Though rough with some rust, the car looks better underneath than initial impressions would suggest. Work won’t be simple or inexpensive, but as far as restoration candidates go this one looks like a shoo-in. Find it here on eBay in Santa Ana, California with a $27,500 BIN.

1965 Sunbeam Tiger MK1

Previous prep has the car covered with filler in several spots, and though lower rockers and other areas show some moderate perforation, body corrosion is not nearly as bad as is commonly found on these models. A hardtop is included separately, and several boxes of trim including bumpers and original black and yellow California license plates are included.

1965 Sunbeam Tiger MK1

The interior has seen better days but does appear to be largely complete including gauges and the OEM radio. Door cards appear to be missing however, though we’d rather source replacements for these than try to find a whole new set of Jaeger instruments.

1965 Sunbeam Tiger Interior

The 260 looks complete and retains its somewhat rare OEM air filter housing. An extra carb is pictured among a pile of parts, but the seller makes no mention of the car’s running condition. We’d guess it’s not working at the moment, though hopefully it still turns freely. The 4-speed manual remains in place, as does the rear end, driveshaft, brakes and suspension components.

1965 Sunbeam Tiger Engine

Several lift shots are also provided, and though floors are rusty in places and some chassis corrosion is visible as well, overall the car looks very restorable.

BaT Auction: 33K-Mile 1976 Corvette Stingray 4-Speed

$

0

This 1976 Corvette Stingray is described as a nice survivor with a documented 33,613 miles. It remained with its original owner until 2013 and is powered by an L48 V8 engine and 4-speed manual. In addition to the desirable transmission, the car is well-optioned with working factory A/C, rear window defogger, tilt steering wheel, and power windows. Extensive service history is included, the seller noting that the only gap in documentation is from 1978-85 (the car covered about 4,800 miles during that time). The car benefits from a recent major service and the seller provides some great walkaround and cold start videos here, here and here.

1976 Corvette Rear

The original paint appears to have held up quite well, apart from some minor blemishes noted in the photos. The rear bumper was repainted because it was badly chipped and detracted from the rest of the car, according to the seller. Check out the walkaround video below.

Nearly all the car’s miles were put on by the original Pennsylvania owner who drove it regularly until the 1980s and sold it in 2013. Though technically a 3-owner car, the second owner was the dealer who sold it to the seller 7 months ago. The ‘76 Corvette sold a record 46,558 units and it was offered only as a coupe.

1976 Corvette interior

The seller notes that the interior shows very little wear and that the red leather remains supple. Except for the clock, everything inside is said to work well, including the AM/FM radio, rear defogger, vacuum operated hidden headlights, power windows and windshield wipers. All the dashboard bulbs have been replaced and the seller also replaced the heater core and the vent gasket foam. The A/C has been converted to new refrigerant and blows cold. Aftermarket replacement floor mats match the interior nicely.

1976 Corvette engine

The 180-horsepower 350 is said to start readily from cold and retains all its original emissions equipment. The seller replaced the fuel lines, belts, hoses, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, air filter, PCV valve and breather and had the carb tuned by a specialist. He also added a Corvette Central dual exhaust setup as used on ‘74 Corvettes, which were the last C3s with a true dual exhaust, but the stock system is an easy retrofit.

Screen shot 2015-07-15 at 1.09.17 PM

The underside looks clean and the seller says there is no known rust in the birdcage. The car reportedly was garage kept its whole life. Original bonding strips are said to be intact and the T tops reportedly are leak-free. Tires are new BF Goodrich T/A radials and the car had a recent 4-wheel aligned. Service history, original owner’s manual and warranty card are included in the sale.

This 1969 Saab Sonett II is largely complete including its original, free-turning Ford-made V4 engine, however rockers seem to have turned to dust long ago and the floors are somewhat rusty, too. Fiberglass looks a bit better though, and provided you’re handy with a welder the car might not be beyond saving. Find it here on Hemmings in Slatersville Rhode Island for $2,800 firm.

1969 Saab Sonett Front

The ad mentions a hole in the engine lid’s power bulge, clearly seen dead-center in the photo above. Though not pictured here, all four OEM hubcaps are included and glass looks salvageable except for the cracked rear window.

1969 Saab Sonett Rear

The interior looks pretty good and is missing only an air vent, though carpets will need replacement and seats a cleaning at the minimum. Suspension pick up points sound to be OK, and the seller says the car would probably hold up well to being towed rear end-down on a two-wheel dolly.

It was purchased by the seller in February 1991 and driven daily for many years until being parked in a carport in 2004. It is believed to have been in California for most of its life, purchased by seller in the Bay Area from the previous long-term owner. The car carries non-op registration but does start, run, and drive, and the seller provides comprehensive lift photos showcasing the car’s condition. Included in the sale is a second engine and transmission, and though missing some small trim items, the car is mostly complete.

The seller believes black is the original color, saying it has never been painted under his ownership and there does not appear to be any evidence of another color. The body is straight and appears to have escaped serious rust thanks to the California climate. Surface rust is evident but the seller says the only area of rust-through is under the driver’s seats which has been patched.

The interior will need at least the seats recovered and new door panels. Gauges looks serviceable and the car has not been modified from stock. It’s all there and this could be made into a cool scruffy driver without spending a ton of money.

The car is drivable with effective brakes and what the seller says is a rough idle. Brakes are said to be effective and the sale included a spare 1800cc engine and 4-speed transmission, both pictured in the gallery below. The spare trans needs a front gearbox cover. The seller does a great job photographing the underside of the car, and though it would benefit from a thorough power washing the photos suggest that this is a worthy candidate for restoration.

This 1975 BMW R90S has been with the seller for 30 years, though the past 10 or so have been spent sitting in their large and impressively stocked shop. A custom turbo and water injection setup is matched with twin plug heads, electronic ignition and more detailed below. Recently made to run again, the bike will nonetheless require recommissioning due to disuse. Find it here on Craigslist in Torrance, California for $4,500. Special thanks to BaT reader David R. for this submission.

Plumbing around the engine and RS fairing is a bit of a mess, and we’d take the opportunity to clean things up a bit when partially disassembled for needed work. Cosmetics look pretty good overall however, especially considering the bike’s impressive 160k mileage.

The seller says it’s never let them down despite the big odo reading. Other supporting mods include a braced swingarm, 1050cc displacement (up from 898cc stock), rear disc brake conversion, late model front end and Morris wheels.

The view behind the fairing shows a few auxiliary gauges, presumably one of which must be a boost gauge. We bet this thing really moves when the needle reads a few pounds with the tach anywhere in its final third. Note the narrow grips.

A very cool period build, it’d probably be possible to improve performance even more with the fitment of a more modern turbo and wastegate management. Keep your left leg tucked away from the snail and hold on.

BaT Auction: Modified 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 Turbo

This 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 Turbo Coupe was purchased by the seller out of Phoenix in 2004 who began modifying it soon after. It’s been well-maintained and heavily upgraded with many bespoke and high quality modifications, and the seller has driven it around 14k miles during the last 11 years. Now showing 48k miles on the odometer, the car received new paint in 2013 and has always been garaged and retains very nice cosmetics inside and out. Modifications include a custom-made carbon fiber engine cover, upgraded turbo, fueling system, big brakes, stealth integrated laser jammer/radar detector and more. Most of the work was completed by WC Engineering and Kirt Wightman of Hypersport Engineering/Dempsey racing. The seller notes that Wightman’s shop was responsible for track prepping Lotus North America’s competition cars at the time and is still regarded as a top Lotus specialist today. The seller admits that the almost $100k he has into the car is a little crazy, and his reserve is a fraction of his costs.

1994 Lotus Esprit S4 Rear

Described as accident free and sold with a clean title, the car retains all original fiberglass panels with good gaps and no cracking, hazing or other common issues. Paint is excellent and was professionally resprayed two years ago. Rotiform wheels are wrapped in good Yokohama S.drive rubber, behind which sit upgraded six piston/large rotor front and four piston rear brakes from Hi Spec in the UK.

1994 Lotus Esprit S4 Diffuser

Note also the custom satin black decklid, inner buttresses and rear roof section–the remainder of the roof is a tinted, removable glass sunroof panel. A custom carbon front splitter is matched by APR Formula GT3 mirrors, and the rear diffuser is a one-off item custom made by Kirt Wightman of Hypersport Engineering/Dempsey racing.

Inside, the car features a recently, professionally installed high-end audio setup featuring Kenwood and Focal components. The seller provides a walkthrough of the features in this video. Additionally, a laser jammer and Valentine One laser/radar detector have been hardwired and stealthily fitted. All gauges, lights and switchgear work as designed, and the dash shows good leather with no shrinking, lifting or other typical problems. The driver’s seat shows some outer bolster wear, but otherwise the cockpit is very clean.

1994 Lotus Esprit S4 Engine

Additional Hypersport fitted mods include coilovers and a comprehensively re-engineered fueling system. The engine itself benefits from a custom-built hybrid Turbocharger as engineered and fitted by noted four cylinder Esprit authority John Welch of WC engineering.

Welch is also responsible for a final tune as well as an engine cosmetics detailing that included painting, powder-coating and polishing of various components. The carbon fiber engine surround is a custom-made and race-inspired item that is very high quality.

A custom-fit car cover is included as well. Acceleration, braking, and handling are all said to have been greatly improved over stock. The seller does not drive the car as much as he used and changing life circumstances are forcing him to sell the auction.

Rusty Sword: Cheap 1959 Sunbeam Rapier II Project

This 1959 Sunbeam Rapier II is offered as a very rusty project that’s thought to be complete apart from the front seats. The owner had originally intended to turn it into a pro tourer, but our inspiration would be something more fitting of the model’s impressive period track and rally heritage as further explored below. Find it here on eBay in Orange Park, Florida with no reserve and three figure bidding.

Sunbeam Rapier II

Lower doors, quarter panels and rockers are heavily affected by rust. OEM steelies and caps are long gone, but glass looks to be fully intact and usable. Corrosion has also taken hold on the roof in several places, most worryingly along the windshield header and C-pillar areas. Chrome looks surprisingly good.

Sunbeam Rapier II

Floors are Swiss cheesed with rot and likely paper thin where no daylight is showing. Keep at least one door closed at all times.

Here’s one on stage of the 1960 Monte Carlo Rally. A street/vintage rally build is almost mandatory.

This one’s color blue and light gray color scheme is also the only way to go. Fit it with some Minilites and a pair of big carbs like these two we featured six years ago and it’d be well on its way.

Parade Runner: 1940 Diamond T 201

This 1940 Diamond T 201 is said to be one of only 627 built that year, fewer still of which were fitted with a dually rear end like this example. Described as all original apart from the seats, it has a definite patina but looks great to our eyes. Further said to run, drive and stop well, the seller adds that it’s one of the quietest six cylinders they’ve ever heard. Find it here on eBay in Westfield, New Jersey for $12k OBO.

The seats look period correct and will be perfectly suitable once a better mounting solution is figured out. An interesting combination gauge and speedo dominate the dash from a central position, though there’s no word on whether they still work properly.

This hood ornament is simply fantastic. We dig the striped green, blue, white color combo and red accents as well.

Diamond T Pickup

Currently run off of a portable gas tank, the truck will need a new, permanent tank and probably new plumbing as well. Described as “sewing machine quiet”, we only wish there was a video of the big six running.
